No Shows For You!

As I was having a lesson in preparation for a horse show this Sunday, Smash and I walked over to th dressage ring to practice my tests.  It was a windy day, and Steph and I were talking about the wind and its effect on riding.  Meanwhile, "something" scared Smash and she did her little hop to the side trick, not once, but twice as the second time she stepped on the dressage ring fencing.  Ack!  I remember havuing her on a long rein, and as I started to fall, my thought was, "I better let go of the reins!"  Good thing I did because Smash took off after she dumped me (as she always does).

Meanwhile, See this:  Sara's Report of the Fall.

After I hit the ground (I do not remember the actual fall) my wrist was hurting and swelling up before my eyes!  Usually, I get right back on the horse, but my wristhurt so much, there was no way.  Reluctantly, I went to the ER and found out I have two simple fractures in my left arm!  Good thing is, no surgery AND it's my left arm.

So, no horse show this Sunday nor on October 6.  These were going to be my last shows of the season.  Guess not.

Hand Doctor says in two weeks he will put on a cast, and more than likely, I can ride again.  Yippee!

Waredaca Show Recap -November 6

Sara and I prepared for the postponed Unrecognized Starter Trials on Saturday; we cleaned up the horses a bit, put the finishing touches on our costumes, and loaded up the trailer as much as we could. Sunday, albeit too early, we took off for the barn to get the last-minute gear and horses on the trailer. Off to Waredaca hoping for a good day.

Sara started off with Smash dressed as clowns and off to her dressage test.

Then, it was my turn:

Bella and I as a Dressage Ring.

Unfortunately, our jumping efforts were not so great; we were both eliminated at the stadium jumping. However, I was told I could go to XC, and I did. The stars were not aligned with Venus or something, and I couldn't get over the first "welcome log" at XC. I was done. We packed up and went home; I was in 4th place after dressage, but eventually was eliminated. And so it goes. We have the winter to work on our problems and have a better spring season next year.

Maybe I should stick to running.

P.S. Sara won 2nd place for her costume: $30.00! Better than a ribbon, I say.

Horse Show Weekend Update

Let's start with some pictures.

Sara, Sallie and I signed up for the third in the series of the Loch Moy Short Course event. To recap: I did the first one by myself and placed fifth; Sara and Sallie came with me too the second series: I came in fourth; Sallie got second; and poor Sara was eliminated during the cross country course. We found out later that Satchmo had a hurt back and was not feeling well at all. We all did the third in the series, but I was the only one who did all three. I was very lucky and placed first in my division. Sara rode another horse, Smash, and came in second in her division. Sallie had a good dressage test, but did not make it through the cross country course.

As excited as I was about placing first yesterday, I got an email from Loch Moy Farm saying I placed third overall for the series. What? Get out of town! Never did I think this would be me winning something like that.

What I Accompllished

The things I accomplished this weekend: 1) blocked back and front of the blue cabled sweater; 2) blocked one sleeve of the blue cabled sweater; 3) cut out all the pieces of my Halloween costume (not an easy task) for the horse show in October (I know it's early, but the way I procrastinate, it will be October by the time this is all finished); 4) started to cut out pieces to a new dress, but alas did not have enough fabric (not an uncommon event); 5) went to Appalachian Spring and exchanged the earrings I received for my birthday (recceived a duplicate pair of earrings from Heinz and Vera); 6) continued knitting on the Christmas shawl. I also messed around with looking at another mitten pattern as I found some yarn in my stash. I found a great ball of white yarn (sock yarn) and leftover varigated yarn (greys, blacks, whites). The colors aren't as vibrant as my other mittens I made with varigated yarn, but more mellow.

The next thing on my list is to start sewing the Halloween costume, but before I can do that I have to purchase a few items: elastic, ribbon, and stitch witchery to make an applique for the vest. I bought the fabric so long ago that I could not remember what fabric was going to be what. I did know what fabric was going to be the dress, but the vest, jacket, and lining were still a mystery to me. So, what did I do? I improvised and made it all up. Everything worked out perfectly even if not the originally intended purpose. Many of the items are to be interfaced, but I'm not dealing with that. The collar I will interface so it stands up properly, but everything else will just have to be without interfacing. Not necessary since I've already put a lot of work into this project.

My riding lesson was good, but it was hot outside and I was riding at 9:30 a.m.! Worked on upward and downward transitions from walk to trot; trot to walk; trot to canter; canter to trot. My arms seem to keep getting in the way, and it is a real task for me to keep my arms and hands down and quiet and not up in the air. Whoever said that I'm "just sitting" on the horse, is woefully mistaken! There's a reason my legs and core and sore after every lesson.

Now is the time to start work on dressage as the dressage show season is coming up. I'm thinking of going to a show on August 1 for a change in venue. Maybe Sara will go so she can do her dressage test before the event on August 13.

Back to work and four days to go. I must work on my running endurance this week as I am running in the Howard County Women's Distance Festival 5K on Sunday. This is the first race I ran, so I go back every year to celebrate every year I've been running. This is year number 3!

It is also Sara's birthday, but she will be on her way home from her rock climbing vacation. In this heat, I wonder if she will survive especially since they are camping and no A/C.

Change of Plans for Dinner -

So, after studying Famous Dave's menu for a long time and deciding what to eat, Dave picks me up and says he doesn't want to go there because it's too noisy. I said, where do you want to go? He says, I don't know. Well, I didn't know either because I had planned on going to FD. We decided to go to Pazani's off Route 103, where they have good pizza.

Oh, the best part - we get to Pazani's and there is a horde of little girls celebrating a birthday and they are having a great time, but it was loud. So much for quiet. All in all, they were well behaved for 10-year olds. They left while we were eating and we saw them go into the Nail Spa down the shopping center. I guess they all got manicures???? I pity the poor people who had to deal with 10, 10-year olds.

Since we had just had pizza the night before we ordered pasta dishes. I saw Chicken Primavera and chose that. When the meal came, it had a cream sauce (does it usually?) I saw it and thought, "Damn!" The dinners came with salads and since Dave doesn't eat salads, I ate mine and his. The salads were small, so the both of them made a decent-sized salad. The meal was, I would say, OK. I put some red peppers on it and little bit of salt, and it still didn't wow me. Their pizzas are the best things they make. I ate only, and make note of this, I ate only half of the pasta! What self control. I'm finally getting into the proper state of mind. Put the rest into a "doggie bag", but the doggie didn't get any of it and brought it home. Not sure what the point count was on this meal, but it could have been worse. I could have eaten it all AND the rolls they gave us, but I did not. {A BIG PAT ON THE BACK FOR THIS SHOW OF CONSTRAINT!}

Dave has left to go on his photo shoot with some people who are setting up a photography shoot. They are going to Conawingo (SP?)Dam. Apparently, bald eagles go there in the morning when the motors are turned on because fish are spewed through and they just pluck the fish out of the water. Hope they are able to see some birds today.

Breakfast is 1/2 bagel from Bagel Bin; they make really good bagels (or sort of, the knife slipped and it's not really half, but I'll call it that or I will be shaving slices of the bagel all morning!) with cream cheese. After I have that Romeo and I will go outside for a nice long walk. Leg still acting up, so walking it is.

Have a 5K on Sunday in Baltimore for a St. Patrick's celebration. As usual, I will have to wear my Protestant orange, just to make a statement. Ha!

Tomorrow Sara and I have a riding lesson. I think I'll be able to ride Bryce (and if that isn't a name for the Horsey Gay Pride Society, I don't know what is!). He is, allegedly, trained to either training level or first level dressage. There is a horse show on March 27. If all goes well: he's a good ride and Cathy can get her trailer out, we will go to Legacy Stables for a dressage show. I think Cassidy might go, but other than the two of us, I don't know.

Went for a 58:01 walk and burned 166 calories. It was a good walk; Romeo is exhausted! Sleeping already.

Weekend Wrap-Up

So, Saturday, to sum up, was a clinic on equine first-aid, then to the LYS for DPs. I did found some nice yarn to make another pair of mittens while I wait for my other order to come in. I found a tan and dark brown combo of yarn for the next pair. Fortunately, my #3 DPs will work for this pair. I swatched, and at first the #3s seemed to be too big; I went down to #1s because that is what I have; way too small and tight. Back to the #3s, which when I really paid attention were perfect. Have no idea what I did, but there ya go.

I'm getting my knitting Gold Medal! I finished Sara's second mitten in a record 13 days, and most of the knitting time was on the train to and from work. My hands were very happy it was over since using a worsted weight and #1 DP needles made for very tight knitting. The mittens are very pretty, and I do like the weight of the mitten with the worsted yarn. Now that I'm using the right yarn with the right needles, it's almost not a challenge!

After my stop at the yarn shop, I went next door to the quilt shop. They have wonderful fabrics, and as I was wandering around, I found some Oriental fabrics. Just beautiful. I bought some fabric with black background and white egrets on it. I should take a picture of it; very pretty. Also, found some mostly gold fabric with Geishas on it which will be a perfect fabric as contrast for the egrets. Thinking: a blouse and use the contrast fabric for the cuffs and collar? Then, I found two panels of Geishas, each different from one another. The panel is almost full size, and I'm not sure what to do. I may have to use just parts of the panel or figure out how to piece a coat/jacket together. I did find

Stopped and bought a dozen bagels from the Bagel Bin. Delicious bagels there! I had one for breakfast on Sunday and the rest went into the freezer.

Sunday a.m. was a trip to Talbot Run and another lesson, but not on Lefty Louie. I rode a mare called, Indy, who is trained up to second level. What a nice ride she was! After ride Bella for so long, it took a few tries to get used to Indy. She is very sensitive in the mouth, and if I just barely pulled back on the reins, she would come down to a trot or walk. Lesson learned, the hard way several times before I got it right. Did some sitting trot on her, and my rear end is really sore. The saddle I used is not as comfy as Bella's and Indy's trot is different, so new sore muscles abound!

Cathy thinks her ring might be ready for riding on Sunday. She's been ever hopeful for several weeks now, but it's still not ready. I am excited to ride her new horse, Bryce, who is supposed to be a great dressage horse, does some jumping. I would like to do an event with him, and fortunately, the events are not until May or June when the weather is nicer.

Drove home, took a shower, and did a lot of vegging. Finally got the yarn cast on for the new mittens, made a Julia Child pound cake. It is delicious and has tons of calories in it. Had planned to make a turkey breast for dinner, but it had not defrosted enough to be able to cook it properly. So, dinner was noodles/sauce and a salad. Dessert? The pound cake, of course.

Monday - Back to work and the same ol' thing. To be continued.

That Gold Medal is Looming in Front of Me

Mitten is now complete, except for the thumb, which I got started on the train last night and got several rounds completed on the train this morning. I have a good feeling that I can finish the thumb by Sunday evening at the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Blocking doesn't count, right? I hope not, or that would put me at the bottom of the list. Ever onward and go for the challenge.

The wind today is absolutely atrocious! I got off the Metro and was practically blown across the street, but not the direction I wanted to go! Finally made it into the office; I'm not going out until it's time to go home.

I ordered some hand-dyed yarn and some white yarn to make yet another pair of mittens. I'm so hooked on mittens. Maybe I should go to the LYS tomorrow and buy another set of DPs. The ones I have are so bent, it is getting difficult to use them. I have #3's, but I think they might be too bid, but swatching it will be. I hate to swatch, but in this case, it's very necessary.

Tomorrow I'm going to an Equine First-Aid Clinic at my instructor's farm; then Sunday back out to Talbot Run to ride one of their horses in a lesson. Cathy's outside ring is still full of snow, so there's no way we can ride at her place. At least, I'm able to get on a horse. Speaking of which, we want to do a show on March 27, but if we can't even get on the horses we are going to take, it will be difficult AND Cathy's and Aileen's trailers are still snowbound. Here's hoping we get a quick thaw and alleviate that problem. What a winter we've had. I'm sure it's not over, but at least we are closer to March 20!

Thursday, But It Should Be Friday

I've made it this far; my left-hand mitten is moving along; and I have one more day to trudge off to work. That pretty much sums up the day. After purchasing wool for Sara's mittens, I now realize I should have bought two skeins of each instead of one. Not a problem, I can always order more! I'm anxious to start her mittens, and I'm anxious to start the dragon scarf I want to make.

Last week I bought some fabric to make a skirt to go with the plaid jacket I just finished. The skirt is nice and has a border at the bottom of it. I have enough of the plaid material leftover so I use that as the border and the jacket and skirt will tie in together! Brilliant, eh? Too many projects and not enough time.

Since I'm going out to lunch today, I did go to the gym this morning, abbreviated as it was, but I am glad I went.

Once again, the weather for the weekend isn't looking too wonderful for riding. Cathy is judging on Sunday and she wants to re-schedule for Saturday. Saturday has a 40% chance of snow showers with a high in the 30s. Sunday is going to be sunny, but very, very cold. 52 days to spring and it can't come soon enough.

Doing a horse show at the end of March. I've forgotten Training Levels 1 and 2; better get out my Whinny Widgets and refresh my memory.

Horse Show Update

Cathy sent out a tentative show schedule with various types of events: dressage, combo shows, eventing, hunter pace, short course. Depending much on my pocketbook and if I'm feeling confident enough, I would like to do at least one show a month. Alot depends on Cathy's availability, and if she is not available, if Aileen would be taking Cassidy to a show, and I can tag along with them.

Only 98 days to Rolex! Aileen has graciously offered to purchase the tickets for us, and we will pay her back once she gets the bill. This way we will have seats all together, which doesn't make much difference where we sit, anyway. It is nice to be near one another. Looks, though, as if Aileen, Cassidy, Sara, Ingrid and I are the only ones going this year. Sallie has volunteered to be a translator at the "world" games, and she doesn't want to go twice to Kentucky. Donna isn't going because she has other plans; Cathy doesn't know if she can go yet because of work and she is worried about her father's health.

Knitting: Started my third skien on the scarf. I'm very, very close to finishing; only problem then is I have to block it just a tad as the ends keep curling inward. Drat!

Ran 3.25 miles on the TM yesterday at a nice, steady pace. Slowed down only twice, but that was to fix my iPod.
